Wedding venue possibilities

As a wedding venue, the property is very unique in its flexibility. Most venues work well for a particular size of wedding due to size constraints. Given the spacing of the buildings and variety of outdoor areas around the property, anything from a 12 person wedding on the Escalante Cliff House roof deck to a 300 person wedding complete with a tent and dance floor set up in the pasture. The buildings are close enough for there to be a small wedding at one and normal guests at another, or for the entire property to be rented out allowing guests to take short walks or drives between the buildings.

What’s new?

While the property has seen many weddings in the past, several upgrades are taking place so that it can better serve as a wedding venue. The North Creek Grill, located behind the Inn, is undergoing renovations to make it capable of catering meals for up to 150 guests. The Birch Creek House was recently added to the property which adds room for another 12 guests to stay in a modern house steps away from the Birch Creek.

This time of year can be quite dangerous to hike in, especially if you are doing backcountry hiking. With snowfall and dropping temperatures, hypothermia and potentially even death are occurrences when safety is not practiced.

Go Out With A Friend

It is always a good idea, especially when backpacking through backcountry to go out with one or more persons. Going alone can be fine, as long as you alert people of where you are going and your agenda. Wear Appropriate Attire

Things To Do In/Near Boulder Utah

Boulder Utah is a small town that is located 48 minutes from Slot Canyons Inn. It’s a pretty unique place with some really fun and interesting activities to do with your kids if you find yourself in that area. We have compiled a list of 6 things to do while in or near Boulder Utah.

1. Devil’s Garden

If the name doesn’t capture your attention then maybe the description will. Devil’s Garden is located within Arches National Park. The scenery here is unique and stunning all in its own way. With several arches being scene from the trail this make a fun and interesting hike for the whole family with a lot of exploration that can be done.

2. Burr Trail

Burr Trail will take you from Scenic Highway 12 all the way to both Capitol Reef National Park in the north and Bullfrog in Glen Canyon to the south. The first portion of the trail to Capitol reef is paved for about 30 miles, and the rest is dirt road that takes you through some amazing and stunning scenery with several canyons that you can stop at to hike and explore.

3. Anasazi State Park & Museum

This is one that the kids will probably enjoy most with being able to learn about and explore and ancient native village that ages back to about 1160 A.D. and possibly housed up to 200 people. The park includes a museum where you can view ancient artifacts from that time era. There are more than 100 remains of the village here and some have been structured to where you and your loved ones can even go in and explore.

4. Escalante Petrified Forest

This is a really cool park that surrounds a lake with hikes that take you to hilltops covered in petrified wood with spectacular views. The park offers tons of fun water sports and fishing at Wide Hollow Reservoir. This is a fun place for the entire family to enjoy.

5. Utah Canyons

Located near Escalante Petrified Forrest, Utah Canyons is seriously meant for the true canyoneers. The landscape of these canyons is what is absolutely breathtaking. Such unique rock formations and slot canyons. This is definitely a place for the serious adventurers.

6. Escalante National Monument

And of course everyone in the area should experience the Escalante National Monument. This is a huge area of beautiful rock formations and slot canyons and more that is extremely exciting to explore, camp, fish and more! You can’t miss out on this experience!

Escalante Petrified Forest – State Park

Escalante Petrified Forest is located at Wide Hollow Reservoir (a short 12 minute drive from Slot Canyons Inn) where boating, fishing and swimming are popular. There is plenty of fun to be had while visiting the park! With the reservoir, hiking trails and exceptional camp sites there is surely something for everyone to enjoy here.

Camping

There are two camp grounds at Wide Hollow, the Wide Hollow camp site and the Lakeview RV camp site. Both sites border the reservoir and offer stunning views of the lake and the surrounding landscapes. The Fee for Wide Hollow site is $16 and Lakeview is $20. Lakeview offers RV hook-ups with some pull in sites and some back in sites. With all the camp sites you will want to check for availability and make reservations ahead of time, especially in the more popular months; summer-fall.

Hiking

Enjoy taking short hikes through the hills above Escalante with captivating views of the valley. Though the views are not generally what bring visitors, its the wood! That’s right, hence the name Petrified Forest. As you hike around you will find piles of petrified wood near the trails. Be careful though, it is said that the wood is haunted and taking it from the park will cause you bad luck!

The trails wind through groves of what once were growing trees during the prehistoric times! There are two loops to hike, the short loop which is perfect for kids and is fairly easy, about a mile long. Then there is Sleeping Rainbow Trail which is longer, steeper and rockier. Definitely for the more advanced and adventurous hikers. Although Sleeping Rainbow is more difficult, it is well worth the effort. This is where you will find the most petrified wood, with the growth rings and bark perfectly preserved!

Water Fun

Bring a boat, or rent a canoe! This reservoir is the perfect place to cool off during those summer months. Plenty of room to tube, water ski and more! Enjoy swimming and playing water sports with loved ones. Bank fishing is especially popular here for trout and bluegill. The best time to visit is in the spring when the water elevation is relatively higher than the rest of the year.

Visitors Center

When you go to the Visitors Center you get the opportunity to see fossilized marine creatures and dinosaur bones! You can also get more information on the hiking, boating, camping and other activities that are permitted inside the park.

3. Try keeping all outdoor adventuring to early mornings or evenings, avoid mid-day temperatures.
4. Hang out in the shade as much as possible.
5. Wear plenty of sunscreen.

Unfortunately not everyone is prepared for the deserts arid conditions, and many people die each year due to heat stroke, dehydration and all in all poor practice of sun safety. To avoid these situations drink plenty of water while out hiking and camping in the area. Try to avoid drinking alcohol or coffee if possible, and if you have consumed that, then make sure to drink even more water. Start your day out completely hydrated to avoid being already deficient in water in turn causing you to need to drink more while out.

Look for the signs of dehydration to put a stop to it before it gets out of hand, such as a headache. Some more symptoms include; dry eyes, nose bleeds, irritated/dry throat, lungs feeling dry and muscle cramps. It is pertinent that if you start getting dehydrated you drink water immediately and continue to drink 4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes to help rehydrate you. If your symptoms are worsening – EVEN A LITTLE BIT – you will want to stop hiking and find shade immediately to cool off and rehydrate in. If your symptoms get worse you may need to get to a doctor as soon as possible. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FINISH A HIKE IF YOU ARE NOT WELL HYDRATED – This is what causes fainting, vomiting (in turn making you more dehydrated) and vertigo and worse, death.

Please try to be as prepared as possible when exploring around these areas and stay hydrated. The desert can be an unforgiving place especially in these climbing temperatures. Safety and health must always come first when exploring any kind of outdoor recreational center.

Have a safety plan in place for if you or anyone in your group experiences any sort of dehydration, heat stroke or heat exhaustion symptoms.

Utah is one of the most visually and physically interesting places to take a road trip. There is so much here to be explored! The best part is that you will never see the same type of landscaping twice. With the Northern parts of utah sticking to the greenery, and the ever-changing Southern Utah desert, it’s no wonder Utah is one of the most desired places to visit for those who love nature and scenic roads to travel. There is beauty and adventure around every turn of the highway. We are not surprised by how many road trippers we accumulate through Escalante.

So to help those who are wanting a visually pleasing trip, here are some really beautiful and fun scenic backways in Utah:

Burr Trail

What started out as a cattle blazing trail is now one of the most picturesque drives in Utah. Pass through some of Utah’s most stunning landscapes and National Park/Monuments like Capital Reef, Grand Staircase and Glen Canyon National Recreational Center. This is a long and classic all American drive that families will love. There are many places to stop and explore with absolutely stunning views. Something that road trippers dream of!

Cottonwood Canyon

One of the most picturesque and fun unpaved backways. This 47-mile dirt road will take you on an adventure of a lifetime. The conditions of the road are good, although you’ll still want to take a decent SUV or 4×4 just to be safe. In spring the roads can become very muddy making it near impossible to drive for any SUV. The begging of this drive will seem stark and desolate, until you roll down into the Paria River Valley, where the landscape drastically changes from desolate desert to beautiful oasis. Be sure to check out the few trails along the way like The Cottonwood Narrows Trail and more.

Hole-in-the-Rock

If you have not heard of Hole-in-the-Rock road, then you are not road tripping right! This is one of the more famous backways. Most of it is located in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, but the last bit takes you through part of Glenn Canyon NRA. This is the original general route that the Pioneers took to find a way across the river, which is now Lake Powell. Should you decide to head further, the road becomes a little more rugged and is best traveled by foot or mountain bike.

Fishing Near Escalante

There are so many different activities to do in Escalante and nearby, and not all include hiking either. Believe it or not, near this seemingly desolate desert, there are lots of lakes and rivers to fish up above in the surrounding mountains! Not only that, but it is considered some of the best fishing in the area. Here are some of the top places to go fishing while visiting Escalante.

Boulder Mountain

Aquarius Plateau

Located on Boulder Mountain is Aquarius Plateau, one of the most stunning and captivating scenic places to fish. This makes up about half of the lakes, ponds and streams of Boulder Mountain. In this area, most of the lakes are located fairly close to roads, making hiking to even the most remote lakes only about a 3-mile excursion. Also, most of the lakes are grouped, so you won’t be stuck in one location (which is nice if the fish in that are are not biting), you can easily hike to a separate lake and try your skills there. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes here, and prepare to climb over boulder to get to your desired locations (hence the name “Boulder Mountain). The “trophy” lakes are located under the steep drop offs of the plateau and are surrounded by beautiful pines and aspen trees that get quite dense, and traveling the roads directly to the lakes are near impossible as they are very unmaintained. Although the trek to these lakes are a bit more difficult, it is well worth it once you catch that trophy size trout!

Otter Creek Reservoir

This name is a big one as it is well known for its production of trophy sized trout. In the perfect conditions during the better seasons, this place literally pumps out thousands of pounds of trout every year! During the spring and fall months this is the perfect shore fishing area since the trout like to stay in the more shallow waters to feed. Wanting to fish in the winter months? You’re in for a treat! Otter Creek is one of the top reservoirs for ice fishing as well! This lake literally gives you all the opportunity to test your fishing skills!

Small towns can seem bland or boring at first glance. They also, usually appear to have about one restaurant. Fortunately, Escalante has quite a few and they are all very tasty! There is surely something to satisfy even the most pickiest eaters! We have compiled a list of our few favorites:

Kiva Koffeehouse

This cute little shop sits among the Grand Staircase Escalante and has a spectacular view. They serve soups and bread, sweet treats and cold drinks. Their specialty though is their delicious coffee’s and espressos. They have a full espresso bar with freshly ground coffee and delectable tea choices. This is a great place to go for a quick pick me up or to just enjoy the scenery and company.

Escalante Outfitters

This is one of the yummiest and most filling places in town to eat. They’re main dish is pizza, and some of the best in town! They have fresh organic fair trade coffee that is ground daily. Their calzones are probably their best sellers and it’s easy to tell why, they are absolutely delicious!

North Creek Grill

Although only open May-October, North Creek Grill is probably one of the most favored restaurants in Escalante. This is most likely due to its one of a kind atmosphere. Owned by husband and wife Rex and Kristen, all their meals are made with only the freshest local ingredients when available. The beef is raised by the owners and is only grass fed. They take a lot of pride in the food that they make here. You won’t want to miss out on their delicious steaks and burgers!

Circle D Eatery

This restaurant offers delicious American style cuisine and is one of the most casual and laid back places to eat in town. Their breakfast menu is simple yet delicious with choices like eggs Benedict, omelettes and fluffy buttermilk biscuits. Definitely a top spot in Escalante.

Cowboy Blues

American West cuisine at its finest. The wild west atmosphere and their scrumptious ribs will keep you coming back for more. The prices are affordable as well making this a perfect family spot for dinner.

Nemo’s Drive Thru

Blast from the past! This burger joint is such a fun and tasty place to please those pallets. The menu ranges from burgers, fish, sweet potato fries and so much more. Afterwards, satisfy those sweets cravings with some of the best ice cream in town!

Kodachrome Basin – History & Activities

Looking for a perfect vacation and picture getaway? Kodachrome Basin State Park offers stunning views to its tourists with its red rock formations under the blue sky. When you go to the park, you will be amazed with the captivating chimneys (monolithic sedimentary pipes) that are rising high making it look like a skyscraper. Apart from its magnificent views, there are so many things that this state park has to offer.

History of the Park

In a 1948 National Geographic Society Exploration comprised of photographers, they were able to witness the amazing landscape with its contrasting colors that bring out the natural beauty of the place. The photographers named the area “Kodachrome Flat”. The area was named after the release of photo film from the camera brand Kodak. Eventually, the area became popular as Kodachrome Basin State Park.

The park features 67 chimneys that rise high in the sky. They range from 6 ft tall to more than 170 ft. You can just imagine how these natural skyscrapers look in person. Whenever you look at the area, it always sparks your imagination with its natural rock formations and its tantalizing beauty.

Two theories emerged as to how these pipes were formed. In the first theory, the area was said to be seismically active for years. As earthquakes occurred, it resulted to the creation of pathways through rock layers. These pathways were filled with sediment and became solid rock. This explains why they have successfully withstood erosion for years.

The other theory believes that pipes actually came from ancient springs. Choking up with sediments, it resulted into a hard rock formation that is resistant to erosion. Although the surrounding rock or the outer rock layers would erode, these pipes were able to withstand erosion as they’re hard cemented.

Activities to Try

Photographers are always mesmerized with the picturesque beauty of Kodachrome Basin State Park. You will never miss a shot especially since the area has lots of nice views perfect for pictures. Although this place is considered to be a haven for photographers and for people who want to witness stunning views, Kodachrome Basin State Park has a lot more to offer. If you are into outdoor activities, you can enjoy all kinds of different activities while you are at the park. From wildlife watching to camping, there are lots of recreational opportunities that you can try. The area is home to different species perfect for wildlife viewing. Plus, you can also enjoy the different campsites available to its guests. These activities are perfect for friends and families who want to have a great time.

Hiking is also a nice activity that you can try since there are amazing hiking trails in the park. Whether you are searching for a relatively easier trail or a much more difficult one, there are plenty of options to choose from. What you will love about hiking at Kodachrome Basin State Park is that you do not just get to experience the physical activity at the park. Capitol Reef – Backcountry

Capitol Reef National Park is such a stunning place to visit and explore. There are so many different types of scenery here it’s absolutely breathtaking. Capitol Reef is very popular for backpacking as well, there is a lot of really exciting backcountry to explore here. Here are some of the most popular backcountry backpacking areas in Capitol Reef.

Halls Creek Narrows
This is a pretty awesome backpacking venture, that round trip will take about 3-4 days to complete. It explores the southern end of the park which is more desolate, and largely unmarked. You will most likely need to carry a topographical map since it is an unmarked area. There are plenty of side canyons that connect with Halls Creek to explore as well. The canyon walls are works of art that tower high and seem to consume you as you travel deeper into the narrows. This is such an awesome hike and one that any thrill seeking backpacker will enjoy.

Pleasant Creek
This is a natural year round stream that has cut a deep canyon. This is an unmarked area and can be very dangerous due to flash flooding and falling rocks, but if you go the right time of year you should be okay. There are footpaths that are unmarked, and the park asks that you stay on these paths and try not to step on the soil crusts that prevent erosion of soft, sandy soils. This can be a day trip, or you can camp here, backcountry permits are required for overnight stays.

Lower Muley Twist Canyon
This is a very narrow and “twisty” canyon. Quite possibly one of the coolest looking canyons in Capitol Reef Park. This canyon was once used as a pathway for the wagons to get to San Juan county for the mormons. They considered it to be narrow enough to “twist a mule” hence he name. A topographical map is suggest for this hiking area as it is unmarked and very easy to get lost in the canyons. This is a very hot hike and the water resources do not always work, so be sure to bring a sufficient amount of water.

Sulphur Creek
This canyon is really awesome! A creek has cut the canyon deep through some of Capitol Reefs oldest exposed rocks. This hike consists about two miles of scenic and beautiful narrows and three waterfalls. This is a dangerous flash flood zone, so make sure you have checked the weather before heading into the hike. This is not an official maintained trail, so there could be route changes due to rockfall and flooding.

There are many more backcountry places to hike in Capitol Reef, these are just a few of the favored hikes. Make sure to always put safety first and talk with park rangers before heading out into the backcountry.

Scenic Highway 12 – Utah

Highway 12 is one of the most scenic roads in the United States. There are two major National Parks that you will come across on this road. With elevations rising from 5,000 to over 9,000 ft. above sea level, Highway 12 cuts through some of the most stunning and rough terrain in Southern Utah. This highway has made its name on the top 10 most scenic drives in the world!

Stretching 124 miles, with 12 curves, this road took nearly 4 decades to build. It travels the land between “martian land” Bryce Canyon National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park.

There are a few other parks that you can make a pit stop at as well on your drive. Dixie National Forest, Kodachrome Basin State Park, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and Anasazi

Some cool things that you can find at each of these places include a wide range of wildlife, beautiful plant life, jaw dropping views and so much more.

Some road trippers take time to stop and enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping and a plethora of other fun and exciting other activities that these parks have to offer. Take a nice cool dip at Calf Creek Falls at Grand Escalante National Monument, hike through the hoodoos and ponderosa pines of Bryce Canyon, take in all the scenery and fresh air as you make your way to the end of the road trip.

One of the more dangerous parts of this journey would have to be Hogsback road, just a two lane highway that twists and turns. This is also one of the more spectacular parts of the trip, due to the fact that there are steep drops along the way creating a panoramic view of the the nature that surrounds you. This is such a scenic portion that it might just cause you to get in an accident because it’s nearly impossible to drive without checking out the amazing view that surrounds you. It truly gives you the idea that you aren’t driving on earth anymore, there just can’t be something this crazy in Utah.

Off in the distance you’ll catch arches and massive canyon walls that will make you keep asking “what’s that and how to do I get there?”. The razorback mountains all around you with the enticing slot canyons below you will beckon that part of you that always wants to be exploring. Then only adding to the scene are the green cottonwood trees that follow along the winding rivers below you, so one moment you’re on top of the world looking out at Mars, and then next you’re driving through leaf covered roads with creeks and waterfalls.

This drive is inspirational, beautiful and almost movie like. We dare say that anyone and everyone should experience a road trip on Hwy. 12 at least once in their lifetime.

Calf Creek Falls in the Grand Staircase

There is quite like visiting a desert oasis. Dry desert heat, beating sun, sand, so much sand! Then suddenly around the corner is a breathtaking, crystal clear, cool waterfall surrounded with green lavish plants. This is the stuff that movies are made of, and also something that can be experienced when you visit the Grand Staircase and hike to the Lower Calf Creek Falls in Escalante National Monument .

The trailhead is located at the Calf Creek campground located off of highway 12, about 15 miles east of Escalante. There is a $5.00 per vehicle fee for a day pass to enter the park. The trail leading to this beautiful waterfall is 3 miles one-way, and it takes approximately an hour and a half to reach the falls.

Set up a campsite near one of the most beautiful hikes that the Grand Staircase has to offer. There is a separate parking fee and overnight camping fee to stay at the Calf Creek campground.

Camping underneath Utah’s clear night skies is an experience all inself, an amazing one at that. Stargazing is one of the main reasons people choose to stay overnight at the Calf Creek Campground.

Hiking to Lower Calf Creek Falls

The hike is semi-difficult due to the sand on the trail, be sure to wear good hiking boots. The hike can get very hot especially in the summer seasons, be sure to bring an efficient amount of drinking water. Dogs are allowed here, but must be leashed. This hike is pretty easy for almost all ages.

The Lower Calf Creek Falls are about 130 ft. high with a deep natural swimming hole at the bottom. There is ample greenery surrounding the falls which makes the scenery that much more movie-esque. The Lower Calf Falls are the more popular to visit and attracts many visitors each year.

What You’ll Find at The Falls

Once you reach the falls you will be amazed that such a beautiful, clear water oasis exists in such a dry desolate landscape. This really does come as quite a surprise to most visitors! Take a cool plunge into the crisp and clean clear waters. Enjoy swimming, playing and exploring the falls with the whole family.

If you are looking for the perfect hike for the entire family, and a fun, exciting way to cool off and relax, then this is the perfect hike to take. This is also a great introductory hike to the Grand Staircase in general, it definitely gives you an idea of what kind of magnificence to expect from the rest of the monument.

For photographers, the main difficulty will be on the summer days, you will want to take the hike early in the morning so that the sun is shining onto the falls for the best shot.

Situated at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Peek-a-Boo and Spooky are considered to be among the best slot canyons in Utah and possibly the world.

Everyone in the family can visit the slot canyon and enjoy the view, but there are precautions that you need to keep in mind. Pets are not allowed. Those who are extremely claustrophobic need to be aware that the slot canyons do get a bit narrow in some spots. People of a large build may find it difficult especially when hiking Spooky.

Once up, you will feel as if you have come to a different world. With its archways, you can witness that beautiful glow in canyons that you will not ever see elsewhere. The canyon widens and the angles would start to subside as you go further in.

How are the Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Canyon different? Spooky Canyon’s walls are straighter. Spooky Canyon is also deeper compared to Peek-a-Boo. Bring at least a small tripod when taking photos in these canyons.

Utah’s Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument

The Slot Canyons Inn has a great location just five miles west of Escalante, Utah on Scenic Byway 12 which is considered one of America’s top scenic byways. In fact, Car & Drive magazine has indicated that Scenic Byway 12 is one of the Top Ten Scenic Drives in America. Escalante is a small community that sits on the edge of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Escalante was settled by Mormon pioneers in the mid eighteen hundreds and, at the time, it was a very remote and not easily accessible location. Today Escalante is the jumping off point for many people who want to explore the Boulder Mountains or the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Our guests have learned that there is plenty to see and do in this area for at least six or more days, and most of our guests stay at least three nights in an effort to catch their first glimpses of this scenic region.

The Grand Staircase is a magical place and is the largest national monument in America. The Grand Staircase includes majestic plateaus such as the Kaiparowitz plateau, and also includes many canyons and narrow passage-ways commonly referred to as slot canyons. The slot canyons in the Grand Staircase are remarkable places to explore. Slot canyons are one of the main attractions for our guests.
